Biocenosis @ Bienal do Mercosul, Porto Alegre, Brasil,September 9 > November20, 2022

BIOCENOSIS was on view at the 13th Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre, Brasil, from Septembre 9 till November 20, 2022.

The 24 m2 installation is the model of a city formed by 430 buildings of different typologies made out of metal, aluminum, 3D printing, acrylic, steel and LEDs. A large team of architects, welders, electronic engineers, acoustic researchers, physicists, chemists, artists and assistants worked for over 6000 hours to achieve the production of the project: an eco-sensitive urban landscape ravaged by a climatic phenomenon that keeps it flooded under the effects of a permanent storm. "...in the model of this city half-submerged into the disaster," writes Pedro Donoso, "we unfold as observers of a time machine and as subjects of an advanced desire for survival. Our architecture will be a social sculpture of metal and lights that shine day and night. From a possible model, the replica wants to introduce us here in the seductive beauty that awaits us in a society whose functioning network shows itself to be both machine-like and sensitive at the same time, like a great multisensory organism."

BIOCENOSIS is an interactive installation born from the collaboration between visual artist Sigismond de Vajay, architect Kevin Lesquenner and the research group LAPSo, Laboratory of Acoustics and Sound Perception.

BIOCENOSIS estuvo exhibida en este momento en la 13a Bienal del Mercosur de Porto Alegre, Brasil, desde el 9 de septiembre hasta el 20 de Noviembre 2022.

La instalación consiste en una maqueta de una ciudad de 24 m2 formada por 430 edificios de diferentes tipologías realizados en metal, aluminio, impresión 3D, acrílico, acero y LEDs. Un amplio equipo formado por, arquitectos, soldadores, ingenieros electrónicos, investigadores acústicos, físicos, químicos, artistas y asistentes trabajaron durante más de 6000 horas para lograr la producción del proyecto: un paisaje urbano ecosensible asolado por un fenómeno climático que lo mantiene anegado bajo los efectos de una tormenta permanente. "...en la maqueta de esta ciudad semihundida en la catástrofe”, escribe Pedro Donoso, “nos desplegamos como observadores de una máquina del tiempo y como sujetos de un deseo adelantado de supervivencia. Nuestra arquitectura será una escultura social de metal y luces que brillan día y noche. Desde un modelo posible, la replica nos quiere introducir aquí en la seductora belleza que nos espera en una sociedad cuyo red de funcionamiento se muestra maquinal y sensible a la vez, como un gran organismo multisensorial.”

BIOCENOSIS es una instalación interactiva surgida de la colaboración entre el artista visual Sigismond de Vajay, el arquitecto Kevin Lesquenner y el grupo de investigación LAPSo, Laboratorio de Acústica y Percepción Sonora.

l’installation de 24 m2 est la maquette d'une ville composée de 430 bâtiments de différentes typologies en métal, aluminium, impression 3D, acrylique, acier et LED. Une riche équipe d'architectes, de soudeurs, d'ingénieurs en électronique, de chercheurs en acoustique, de physiciens, de chimistes, d'artistes et d'assistants a travaillé pendant plus de 6000 heures pour réaliser le projet : un paysage urbain écosensible ravagé par un phénomène climatique qui le maintient inondé sous l'effet d'une tempête permanente. "...dans la maquette de cette ville à moitié engloutie dans la catastrophe, écrit Pedro Donoso, nous nous déployons comme observateurs d'une machine à remonter le temps et comme sujets d'un désir avancé de survie. Notre architecture sera une sculpture sociale de métal et de lumières qui brillent jour et nuit. A partir d'un modèle possible, la réplique veut nous introduire ici à la beauté séduisante qui nous attend dans une société dont le réseau de fonctionnement apparaît à la fois machinal et sensible, comme un grand organisme multisensoriel".

Collaboration with Tramando - limited edition of natural silk foulards

When we met with Martin Churba, we started a dialogue that led us to a future collaboration. Possible interactions emerged naturally, combining fashion design and visual art in a direct way.

From "Tramando Ecosistema" we launched the production, in limited edition, of three foulards in 100% natural silk. They are reproductions of my watercolors belonging to the "Unreachable Empires" series, with techniques that manage to transfer the artworks to the textile in the most faithful and finest way. 

A year after this first encounter, with the coronavirus lockdown in the way, we finally present on-line the result of this collaboration with the intention of making the work more accessible and portable at the same time.

From art publications to the garment there is only one step. A most popular access to art is something that always interested me, and this collaborative project, in a way, speaks of this process, of sharing and expanding audiences by creating bridges that connect neighboring worlds.

Collaboration con Tramando en la edición limitada de foulards de seda natural 

Cuando nos conocimos con Martin Churba iniciamos un dialogo que genero la puesta en marcha de una colaboración. Surgieron naturalmente posibles interacciones combinando el diseño de indumentaria y el arte visual de forma directa.

Así fue que desde "Tramando Ecosistema" lanzamos la producción, en edición limitada, de tres foulards en seda 100 % natural. Los mismos son reproducciones de acuarelas de mi serie "Unreachable Empires”, con técnicas que logran traspasar las obras al textil de la forma más fiel posible. 

Al año de ese primer encuentro, con el coronavirus de por medio, por fin presentamos on-line el resultado de esta colaboración con la intención de hacer que la obra sea mas accesible y portátil a la vez. 

Del libro a la prenda hay solo un paso. El acceso más popular al arte es algo que siempre me resulto interesante, y este proyecto colaborativo, de alguna forma, habla de este proceso, el de compartir y ampliar públicos creando puentes uniendo mundos vecinos.

Collaboration avec Tramando dans l'édition limitée de foulards en soie naturelle

Lorsque nous nous sommes rencontré avec Martin Churba, nous avons entamé un dialogue qui a abouti à la mise en place d'une collaboration. Les interactions possibles sont apparues naturellement, combinant de manière directe la conception de pièces textiles et l'art visuel.

Ainsi, à partir du "Tramando Ecosistema", nous avons lancé la production d'une édition limitée de trois foulards en soie 100% naturelle. Ce sont des reproductions des aquarelles qui font partie de ma série "Unreachable Empires", avec des techniques qui parviennent à transférer les œuvres sur le textile de la manière la plus fidèle. 

Un an après cette première rencontre, avec la crise du coronavirus au milieux du processus, nous présentons enfin virtuelement le résultat de cette collaboration dans l'intention de rendre le travail plus accessible et portable à la fois. 

Du livre d'art à la confection de pièces textiles, il n'y a qu'un pas. L'accès populaire à l'art est quelque chose que j'ai toujours trouvé fort intéressant, et ce projet de collaboration parle en quelque sorte de ce processus, de partage et d'élargissement des publics en créant des ponts qui unissent des mondes voisins.

Entrecruce latinoamericano: travestismo cultural

Fourteen Latin American artists of international relevance open the new space of Aninat Galería under the curatorship of Isabel Aninat This collective exhibition has been managed and prepared for more than two years by the gallerist, who has interviewed and visited studios of the different artists to make an interesting selection of pieces. The exhibition raises different questions regarding the different influences that the Latin American world receives from the great powers and how this responds by proposing a new language.

Among the artists that will make up this show are: Analivia Cordero (Brazil), Alberto Borea (Peru), Carlos Motta (Colombia), Sybil Brintrup (Chile), Huanchaco (Peru), Lotty Rosenfeld (Chile), Marcelo Brodsky (Argentina), Patricia Belli (Nicaragua), Raúl Zurita (Chile), Sandra Gamarra (Peru), Ricardo Rendón (Mexico), Sigismond de Vajay (Argentina), Oscar Muñoz (Colombia), Liliana Porter (Argentina), Luis Romero (Venezuela)

There is great excitement from the gallery to ask the question—if this is possible—about who we are and how we have developed culturally, this was also the question that eleven years ago we wanted to make visible in a first exhibition of Entrecruce latinoamericano, in which the artists were gathered to investigate our history from the mixture of influences. Eleven years later, knowing that—every question about our origin will remain open—we establish again a dialogue about our identity and influences, which we seek to make visible from a cultural transvestism, about how those influences are investitures that over time formed a characteristic identity, relating that—investing or dressing as—with the taking of those most influential cultures, which are shown as superior and more effective.

Entrecruce latinoamericano: travestismo cultural is an exhibition that seeks to emphasize the question of approaching our history and constitution as Latin Americans, with the aim of "being able to understand our work from a collective imaginary perspective and thus generate ties and structures of thoughts where the languages do not float without aim", as Isabel Aninat writes.

Catorce artistas latinoamericanos de relevancia internacional abren el nuevo espacio de Aninat Galería bajo la curaduría de Isabel Aninat. Esta exhibición colectiva ha sido gestionada y preparada por más de dos años por la galerista, quien ha entrevistado y visitado estudios de lxs diferentes artistas para realizar una interesante selección de piezas. La exhibición plantea diferentes interrogantes respecto a las distintas influencias que el mundo latinoamericano recibe de las grandes potencias, y cómo éste responde proponiendo un lenguaje nuevo.

Existe una gran preocupación desde la galería por la pregunta —si ésta es posible— sobre quiénes somos y cómo nos hemos desarrollado culturalmente, ésta era también la pregunta que hace once años quisimos hacer visible en una primera exhibición de Entrecruce latinoamericano, en la cual lxs artistas estuvieron reunidos para indagar nuestra historia a partir de la mezcla de influencias. Once años más tarde, a sabiendas de que —toda pregunta que se haga sobre nuestro origen quedará abierta— establecemos de nuevo un diálogo sobre nuestros cruces de identidad e influencias, los cuales buscamos hacer visibles desde un travestismo cultural, sobre cómo esas influencias son investiduras que con el tiempo formaron una identidad característica, relacionando ese —investirse o vestirse de— con la toma de aquellas culturas más influyentes, que se muestran como superiores y más eficaces.

Entrecruce latinoamericano: travestismo cultural es una exhibición que busca hacer un énfasis en la pregunta sobre el acercamiento a nuestra historia y constitución como latinoamericanos, con el fin de “poder entender nuestro quehacer desde una perspectiva del imaginario colectivo y así, generar vínculos y estructuras de pensamientos donde los lenguajes no queden flotando sin hilación”, según escribe Isabel Aninat.
